IT HAS been revealed that domestic football tops are not permitted at Sam Fender’s upcoming Edinburgh gig, despite the singer’s collaboration with Newcastle United.
Fans have raised concerns about not being allowed to wear “domestic football tops or tops displaying club logos” at the Edinburgh Summer Sessions, as many often wear Newcastle United football shirts to Fender’s gigs.
This honours Fender’s roots, as the Seventeen Going Under singer hails from North Shields, just north-east of Newcastle.
According to the terms and conditions of the event later this month, ticket holders may be refused entry if they are wearing football tops.

For the 2024/25 season, Fender, 31, collaborated with Newcastle United to create a home shirt commemorating the launch of his album People Watching.
The shirt uses Newcastle’s classic black and white stripes, with Fender’s album cover on the back – a photo taken by renowned social documentary photographer Tish Murtha.
Imposed onto the design is also a picture of the Tyne Bridge and two magpies to represent the Newcastle United crest.
Fender often utilises the club’s black and white stripes in his merchandise, selling a keyring in the shape of his striped guitar and a black and grey football shirt with his name on the back.
According to the special event conditions at Edinburgh Summer Sessions, “No domestic football tops or tops displaying club logos will be permitted and you may be refused entry”.
This applies to both Fender’s gig later this week and Chappell Roan’s concert on 26 and 27 August.
Fans took to social media with concerns over the rule, with one saying: “Ticketmaster UK, no domestic football tops allowed for Sam Fender in Edinburgh?”
Another replied: “Can’t imagine anyone listening to this.”
Glasgow’s recent TRSMT festival also banned domestic football tops this year, as well as non-national flags.
Edinburgh Summer Sessions and DF Concerts have been contacted for comment.
