West Brom boss makes promise to'humble'Man Utd loanee after Championship debut,'I'm going to...'

Toby Collyer made his debut for West Brom at the weekend after leaving Manchester United on loan.

After making 13 senior appearances for Manchester United, Toby Collyer joined West Brom on a season-long loan with no option to buy.

The 21-year-old midfielder is seen as one of United’s brightest talents, but Ruben Amorim decided it would be best for his development to go out on loan for the season.

That way, Collyer can experience regular senior football and return a better player next year, granted there are no setbacks.

The Championship season started last week and there has already been two rounds of fixtures. Thankfully for Collyer, West Brom are one of the teams that are pushing for promotion back to the Premier League.

Collyer will be eager to hit the ground running and impress West Brom fans.

Ryan Mason believes in Toby Collyer

It was a boost for West Brom’s promotion bid that they secured the signing of Collyer, beating other Championship clubs to a loan deal until the end of the season.

The highly-rated midfielder is renowned for his athleticism and ability on the ball.

Collyer came on for his debut as a late substitute in a 3-2 win over newly promoted Wrexham on Saturday.

West Brom manager Ryan Mason has been speaking about Collyer’s chances at West Brom, and it is clear that the Baggies boss has been trying to sign him for some time.

“Toby’s a young player, but we know we’re going to need him and he’s going to help us,” Mason said, as quoted by the Express and Star. “I’ve wanted Toby for a few weeks now. He’s someone that I really believe in, which is important and I have that belief in all of my players.

“But when you go on loan to somewhere, I think you need to feel like you’re wanted from the club and the manager and he certainly is that.

“Hopefully we can help him because if we help him improve and grow as a player, then it’s certainly going to be beneficial to us.

“I think there’s loads of room and loads of growth to develop. That’s certainly going to happen on the training pitch. The reality is the game is the best teacher.

“The more game exposure you can get, the better, especially at a young age. I’m sure and I expect that Toby knows that I believe in him, which for me is super important.

“I’m going to put a lot of energy, the same amount of energy that I’ve put into him as every other one of my players, to help them grow and improve.”

Mason added: “He’s a good kid, humble, wants to work, wants to be part of it. You can feel that as soon as you speak to him.

“He wants to play football, loves football and that’s super important. We want those types of people in the building who want to work and be part of something.

“On Saturday he replaced Isaac (Price) and had a bit of a higher role, but there’ll be times where he’ll be a bit lower and we’ll be expecting and demanding different things from him. Most importantly, he’s going to work hard. He’s part of a group. He’s part of a team and a football club that want to help him.”

Collyer stats vs Wrexham

Collyer came on for four minutes against Wrexham and completed all of his passes.

Moreover, Collyer touched the ball five times and made one defensive contribution, winning his only ground duel.
