Wyc Grousbeck might no longer be operating as governor of the Boston Celtics, but it appears as though he will very much remain in the thick of the team’s ownership.
After months of dotting I’s and crossing T’s, the sale of the Celtics officially closed Tuesday, with the team getting sold to Bill Chisholm. The NBA had approved the deal last week, so Tuesday signifies that the money effectively has been exchanged to transfer ownership to Chisholm.
Even after Chisholm had purchased the team, there was an expectation Grousbeck would continue to operate as governor through 2028. However, that abruptly changed, with ESPN reporting last week that Grousbeck would be surrendering his role. The reason for that remains unclear.
In the release announcing the sale, some clarity emerged on what Grousbeck will be doing going forward. He will be one of two alternate governors under Chisholm.
“Chisholm will serve as Governor, and Wyc Grousbeck and Aditya Mittal will serve as Alternate Governors. Grousbeck will be a Co-Owner and CEO, running day to day operations with Chisholm and the existing basketball and business management teams,” the statement read.

“Chisholm’s investor group is led by Co-Owners and Members of the Managing Board of the Boston Celtics, which includes Grousbeck, Mittal, Bruce Beal, Andrew Bialecki, Dom Ferrante, Rob Hale, Mario Ho, and Ian Loring. Global investment firm Sixth Street is also a major participant in the investment group.”
How long Grousbeck holds such a role remains to be seen. However, it appears at the least he will continue to be around as the Celtics transition to a new era of ownership.
