Indiana Pacers make big decision on coach Rick Carlisle

Indiana Pacers coach Rick Carlisle has agreed to a multi-year contract extension.

Indiana Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle has agreed to a multi-year contract extension after leading the team to the NBA Finals last season, according to Marc Stein.

Carlisle, 65, owns a career coaching record of 993–860 in the regular season and 83–83 in the playoffs. He guided the Dallas Mavericks to an NBA Championship in 2011.

Over his coaching career, Carlisle has led three franchises: the Detroit Pistons (2001–2003), the Pacers (2003–2007, 2021–present), and the Mavs (2008–2021). He also spent time as an assistant with the New Jersey Nets, Portland Trail Blazers, and Pacers.

Before coaching, Carlisle played in the NBA and was part of the 1986 Boston Celtics championship team. He remains one of only 11 people to win an NBA title as both a player and a head coach.

Known for his tactical acumen, Carlisle has been praised for his ability to adapt offensive systems to his players' strengths, notably with the Pacers' high-powered offense in recent seasons.

Last season, the Pacers finished as the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference but went to the 2025 NBA Finals, where they lost to the Oklahoma City Thunder in seven games.
