Fabrizio Romano responds to Andre Onana transfer rumour, amid claims goalkeeper could return to former club

Andre Onana has been the subject of transfer speculation this summer after two difficult seasons at Manchester United.

Manchester United have been busy this summer, but there is a chance Ruben Amorim will make further additions to his squad after welcoming four new signings to the club this summer.

Ineos have backed Amorim in the transfer market by signing Matheus Cunha, Diego Leon, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko.

After focusing on the attacking department, it is understood that United have been eyeing a new goalkeeper and midfielder.

There have been question marks over Andre Onana’s reliability between the sticks and whether Altay Bayindir provides enough competition for United’s first-choice stopper.

Bayindir started the first game of the season due to Onana’s unavailability after missing the entirety of pre-season with a hamstring injury. The Turkey international committed a howler that granted Arsenal three points at Old Trafford.

United legend Gordon Hill has since expressed concerns over United’s goalkeepers.

Andre Onana is not returning to Inter Milan

After starring in an Inter Milan side that reached the 2023 Champions League final, Onana completed a £47.2 million transfer to United.

Since then, the Cameroon international has endured two difficult seasons at Old Trafford.

A fresh report from The Sun on Monday suggested that Onana could return to Inter Milan, as speculation grows over the goalkeeper’s future.

It was reported that Inter believe the 29-year-old would be ‘open-minded’ to a return to the San Siro, where he is considered a cult hero among Inter supporters.

Inter have previously been linked with a move for United target Senne Lammens, but the latest reports suggest they are also eyeing alternative options in the market.

However, in the past 24 hours, the story has been downplayed by reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, who believes there has been no contact between Inter and Onana’s representatives.

On his YouTube channel, Romano provided his latest transfer update, saying: “Let me deny a story we had on the English press on Andre Onana – mentioning that Onana is maybe going back to Inter? Maybe a loan deal?

“This kind of stuff is not true. Andre Onana accepted a decision from Ruben Amorim on the opening game of the Premier League against Arsenal not to include him in the squad just because Onana was returning from an injury.

“Of course, Onana is not injured. This is what Ruben Amorim said but at the same time Onana is still recovering the best form so Onana accepted the decision.

“Onana didn’t call Inter to go back. Onana didn’t make any move to leave the club. The last contact was with the Saudi clubs at the end of May, beginning of June, then nothing else happened. Still no movement on this one.”

When could Onana return for Man Utd?

Although the jury is still out on Onana, United fans will be eager to see the Cameroonian return and replace Bayindir in the line-up.

Onana is still recovering from a hamstring injury after returning to first-team training at Carrington last week.

There is a chance that Onana will return to the team against Fulham this weekend, or Amorim may wait until the Red Devils travel to Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup second round.

United have one more game before the international break against Burnley if the next two games come too soon for Onana.
