La Liga club Villarreal are reportedly plotting a raid on Leeds United for the services of their defensive mainstay, Pascal Struijk.
According to a report from Football Insider, Villarreal are interested in acquiring the services of Pascal Struijk before the end of the transfer window. They have made their interest in the Dutch centre-back known, as they eye a late move for the Leeds United mainstay.
Struijk joined Leeds back in 2018. He went up the ranks and got promoted to the first team. He has been an integral part of their team under Daniel Farke, making 63 appearances over the last two seasons. While he prefers playing in the heart of the defence, he can even feature as a left-back when needed.
Villarreal could table an offer for Struijk
His performances have caught the attention of Villarreal, who are looking to reinforce their backline before the transfer deadline. While he has been a key part of Farke’s first team, Leeds could look to cash in on him as he only has two years left on his deal.
The Yorkshire-based outfit have strengthened their backline with the additions of Sebastiaan Bornauw, Jaka Bijol, and Gabriel Gudmundsson. Their arrivals have cast doubt over the role the 26-year-old will play moving forward, and he himself might be tempted by a move to Spain, where he would likely enjoy a more prominent role.
The chance to feature in the Champions League could prove too good to resist, especially when staying at Leeds would mean yet another battle for survival in the Premier League. Villarreal are planning to build on their fifth-place finish last season, and the versatile Struijk could certainly help their cause.
The Spanish club have already registered their interest in him, and it will be interesting to see if they formalise it with an offer in the coming days. Meanwhile, Leeds’ stance on his future isn’t clear yet. However, they could certainly consider letting him leave for the right fee, given the defensive additions they have made this summer.
