Everton got off to a less-than-ideal start to their Premier League campaign as they lost 1-0 to newcomers Leeds on Monday.

A controversial penalty was given to the hosts after referee Chris Kavanagh judged that James Tarkowski had handled a goal-bound shot at Elland Road.

The Toffees haven’t had the best of summers, failing to win any of their six pre-season games, and have only brought in three serious signings in Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Jack Grealish and Thierno Barry.

David Moyes will be hoping for better against Brighton in their second game of the Premier League season, but one key stat has already put them on the back foot at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton have won just two of their last seven against Brighton

Moyes is still in search of another midfielder this summer, with Hayden Hackney previously scouted by Everton.

MORE TOFFEES STORIES

Against Leeds, Everton’s lack of depth was exposed, with James Garner playing at left-back and Jake O’Brien playing at right-back.

The pair struggled at Elland Road and could do the same if used against Brighton on Sunday, 24 August, given the Toffees’ poor record against the Seagulls.

Everton have won just two of their last seven against Brighton, but Moyes did pick up a win against Sunday’s opponents in his second game back on Merseyside last season.

Everton have 11 wins, seven draws, and six losses to Brighton

The Seagulls have begun to turn the tide since their return to the top-flight, having won three and drawn two since February 2022

Moyes has also won just three of his 12 games against Brighton in his managerial career.

At the start of last season, Everton lost 3-0 at Goodison Park to Brighton, and supporters will be hoping they don’t meet the same fate at the Hill Dickinson curtain-raiser on Sunday.

Things will get worse before they get better for Everton

Everton look set for another defeat to Brighton on Sunday.

The Blues have been useless for most of this summer and haven’t addressed their clear problems in the transfer window.

Having lost good depth in the likes of Ashley Young and Abdoulaye Doucoure at the end of last season, The Friedkin Group have left it late to find replacements.

Everton’s record against Brighton doesn’t bode well as it is, but with their current squad as it is, things are only going to get worse.

The Leeds defeat was a wake-up call on Merseyside, and The Friedkin Group may finally realise that they must change up their squad, but they won’t be able to do so in time for the game against the Seagulls.
