The Cincinnati Bengals offensive and defensive starters took the field for a few series on Monday night against the Washington Commanders. Even though Cincinnati won the preseason contest 31-17 over Washington, there was major concern for the first-team starters when they had to face quarterback Jayden Daniels and others.

Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson (91) talks with director of player personnel Duke Tobin before the first quarter of the NFL Preseason Week 2 game between the Washington Commanders and the Cincinnati Bengals at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Md., on Monday, Aug. 18, 2025.
The Bengals defensive starters also did not perform well against Philadelphia Eagles backup quarterback Tanner McKee. Because Cincinnati’s defense was getting gashed against Washington’s first unit, it is obvious that the Bengals need to pay up Trey Hendrickson.

Cincinnati fans knew how bad the defense was getting gashed against Daniels on Monday night. This fanbase knows it is more than time for the team to give Hendrickson a contract extension. This is what some Bengals fans said on Twitter after the game against the Commanders:

Hendrickson is 30 years old and was one of the best defensive linemen in the league last season as well. He recorded 46 tackles, 17.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and six pass deflections. It would be a mistake for the Bengals to trade him. This fanbase knows that they have to give him a contract extension.
The offense led by quarterback Joe Burrow will not be an issue. They are going to score points week in and week out. The question will be, can Cincinnati make key stops with the game on the line? There has not been a lot of promise from this Bengals defense in the preseason. This is why they want to see Hendrickson signed now and end this contract drama.
