To the tune of “Do the Conga,” Liverpool fans belted out: “Duh, duh, duh, Hugo Ekitike.”

The striker quickly caught on, admitting afterwards that he loved every second.

“I heard the song when I was [in the] corner. It was amazing. I’m very grateful and I want to hear it louder next time! It was fun,” he told Liverpool FC.

His debut strike arrived in the 37th minute, with Ekitike battling through defenders before finishing calmly.

Reflecting on the goal, he said:

“I’ve been a bit lucky with the touch. I tried to meg the defender but the ball came back and then I was alone.”

Ekitike then marked the moment with a gesture in memory of Diogo Jota, explaining:

“The celebration was for Diogo because I think it was an important day for him and his family and for the crowd. Obviously we were celebrating him.”

Even after being subbed off in the 72nd minute, Ekitike remained locked into the action from the bench.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he praised the supporters:

“It’s an amazing stadium. The fans at the end when it was at 2-2, they pushed so much. Even on the bench, I enjoyed it. I wanted to be in the crowd!”

For a £79m summer signing, Ekitike could hardly have asked for a better Anfield debut.

His goal, his bond with the Kop and his growing importance under Arne Slot suggest he will be central to Liverpool’s ambitions this season.
