Eagles WR carted off field with leg injury at practice

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Johnny Wilson was carted off the practice field after suffering what appeared to be a left leg injury during Tuesday’s practice.

Wilson limped off the field and into the medical tent after getting rolled up on by offensive lineman Brett Toth during a drill. Reporters at the NovaCare Complex noted that Wilson was unable to put any pressure on his left foot. He was later carted off the field.

It’s an unfortunate setback for Wilson, who was looking more and more like a lock to make the Eagles’ 53-man roster in a crowded wide receiver room.

Wilson, a 2024 sixth-round pick out of Florida State, had a slow start to training camp but flashed in the Eagles’ preseason opener. The 6-foot-6 target had three catches for 73 yards against the Cincinnati Bengals, including a couple one-on-one jump balls.

Wilson barely played in the Eagles’ second preseason game against the Cleveland Browns, a possible sign that his spot on the roster was pretty secure.

Wilson was sitting firmly behind A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith and Jahan Dotson in the pecking order. But the 228-pound target, who was used primarily as a blocker in his rookie season, adds a different element to the Eagles’ offense.

After the Eagles traded for Houston Texans receiver John Metchie III over the weekend, it was expected that, if Philadelphia rostered only six receivers, it would be second-year speedster Ainias Smith and undrafted rookie Darius Cooper fighting for the final spot.

Now, we’ll have to wait to find out the severity of Wilson’s injury — and how that might affect his place on the 53-man roster.
