Peter Schmeichel has urged Rasmus Højlund not to give up a long term future at Manchester United, believing the striker deserves a chance at Old Trafford.
[Tipsbladet](https://www.tipsbladet.dk/nyhed/premier-league/sender-klar-besked-til-hoejlund) cover comments from the Manchester United icon today in which he sticks up for his fellow Dane and sees a way forward.
Højlund has been heavily linked with a move away from Manchester United this summer, particularly after their big summer spend on forward additions such as Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko.
The latter is a direct replacement, and it now appears that Højlund is not in Ruben Amorim or Manchester United’s plans moving forwards.
Napoli are currently pushing to sign him as a replacement for Romelu Lukaku, who is set for an extended spell on the sidelines after picking up a serious injury in pre-season.
A deal appears to be progressing for him to leave on loan for the season, with the Italian champions having an option to make the move permanent next summer for €40m.
Schmeichel would be disappointed to see that move sanctioned, though, as he believes that Højlund should be given more of a chance at Manchester United.
_“If I were to advise Rasmus, and I was his agent, or his father or whoever he listens to, I would take a one-year loan deal to a place where you play against the same kind of defence, physical defenders, where the game is of the same nature, but it is an easier place to be, and then on a team that creates a lot of chances,” he said._
_“If he could go, score 20-25 goals and he could come back next year and ask the manager, ‘Can you use me now or can’t you use me now?’_
_“We saw last year that he is a fighter, and he wants to fight for every little thing, he has never had anything given, and I think he wants to fight for his place before. But if the manager has decided there isn’t enough space and there are a lot of strikers, it’s a tough situation he’s in.”_
