‘Most surprising thing’… What Marcus Rashford noticed in ‘top’ Barcelona teammate sums up Man Utd ace’s huge prediction

Manchester United and England player Marcus Rashford has singled out two key details from his interaction with one Barcelona talent at the Camp Nou.

Marcus Rashford made his La Liga debut for Barcelona on Saturday in the defending La Liga champions’ 3-0 drubbing of Real Mallorca at the Estadi Mallorca Son Moix.

The 27-year-old Manchester United forward started the La Liga match on the bench before Barcelona manager Hansi Flick turned to Rashford for the second half.

Rashford was subbed on for Ferran Torres in the 69th minute of the 3-0 win over nine-man Real Mallorca, with the United player securing valuable first-team minutes.

Goals from Raphinha, Ferran Torres and Lamine Yamal ensured that Hansi Flick’s men kicked off their La Liga title defence by securing three points away from home.

Marcus Rashford’s loan transfer to Barcelona this summer has allowed the Manchester United player to cross paths with highly rated winger Lamine Yamal.

Yamal rose through the ranks of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy and the 18-year-old Spanish-born wonderkid has had a major impact in his early playing career.

The attacking talent has already lifted two La Liga titles and a Copa del Rey with Barcelona, as well as capturing the European Championship trophy with Spain in 2024.

Rashford has now admitted that he was caught by complete ‘surprise’ with the maturity of Spain and Barcelona winger Yamal after playing alongside him.

“He’s a top talent, a top player,” he told Spanish newspaper Sport.

“The most surprising thing is how mature he is for his age. How he thinks and plays. He’s way beyond his years.

“It’s exciting to play with him, and with others too. I’m adapting to the change in environment, pace, and football, and the best place to do that is on the pitch.

“I’ll make mistakes, but I’ll also learn a lot and improve. The quality of the players helps a lot, and as I said before, for me, the easiest place to learn is on the pitch.”

Yamal’s exploits for the 2024-25 campaign earned the Spain and Barcelona wonderkid a place on the 30-man shortlist for the 2025 Ballon d’Or award.

Rashford has insisted that he expects the La Masia alumnus to lift France Football’s sought-after prize at some stage in his career, even if he doesn’t pull it off in 2025.

When asked if Yamal could win the Ballon d’Or prize in 2025, the United player said: “Yes, definitely. If he doesn’t win it this year, he will win it in the future.”

Rashford added: “[Ousmane] Dembele, [Raphinha], they all deserve it. It’s hard to pick one, but they’re all mature and have had a fantastic season.

“Lamine is so young that he’s sure to win it.”

Ballon d’Or organisers France Football will announce the winners of the 2025 edition of the highly rated prize at the Theatre du Chatelet on 22nd September in Paris.
