Everton have “done a Chelsea” after official documents have been filed at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Chelsea sold their women’s team to owners BlueCo last summer for around £200million, helping them turn their previous £90million loss for 2022-23 into a £128million profit for 2023-24.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa completed the last-ditch sale of their women’s team earlier this summer, helping them raise funds before their accounting deadline on 30 June.

Everton were previously docked eight points after breaching the profit and sustainability rules (PSR), with Premier League clubs only permitted to make £105million worth of losses over a rolling three-year period.

The Times reported on 28 July Everton have sold their women’s team to a parent company in a move that should generate a paper profit of tens of millions of pounds that could help the club make new signings and still comply with the PSR rules.

Everton get PSR boost after Friedkin move

This article contains exclusive comment fromStefan Borson, a former financial adviser to Man City.

Everton Football Club Women Limited’s annual confirmation statement to Companies House on 14 August confirmed all three issued shares in the women’s team were held by EFCW Holding Company Limited, which is 100 per cent owned by Roundhouse Capital Holdings Limited.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson said: “Well, there was some talk that Everton FC, the men’s team effectively, had kept 33 per cent.

“They kept one of the shares of the three, but that’s not true. The three shares have all gone to this other part of the group.

“So, the likelihood is that they’ve done an Aston Villa, Chelsea women’s teams intra-group sale for profit and PSR purposes. That’s what it looks like.

“There is one small wrinkle. I won’t go into it, but there’s one small explanation, which may mean that it’s not been executed yet, but it definitely looks like it.

“It’s no big surprise. I mean, we’ve been talking about that as a possibility for months.

“It does look like this is the confirmation that that’s what’s happened, and they say they’ve transferred the women’s team and Goodison Park, presumably for profit to a separate part of Roundhouse, which is the group parent company that should generate a profit within the Everton men’s team for PSR purposes.”
