Newcastle United have been handed a blow in the proposed race for wantaway Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson, according to the latest reports.
The Magpies are firmly in the market for reinforcements in forward areas following the departure of Callum Wilson on a free transfer, while uncertainty continues to surround Alexander Isak's future at St James' Park. Having tried, and ultimately failed, to sign the likes of Joao Pedro, Hugo Ekitike, and Benjamin Sesko, Newcastle are now running out of options before the deadline.
One player who could be attainable in the final two weeks is Chelsea's Jackson, with the Senegal international having fallen down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge following the summer arrivals of Pedro and Liam Delap. However, Newcastle have yet to step up their pursuit of the £60m-rated forward, with Jackson seemingly just one of a handful of potential options on an ever-shrinking list.
The latest update from The Telegraph suggests Newcastle may no longer have time on their side and now face Premier League competition for his signature. According to the report, Aston Villa are exploring the viability of a move that would see Jackson reunite with former manager Unai Emery.
The article notes that Chelsea's valuation may place Jackson out of reach for the Midlands club, which could work in Newcastle's favour later in the window should they choose to act on their interest. A loan move with an option or obligation to buy may be Villa's only feasible route, although Chelsea's stance on a loan exit could yet soften as the deadline approaches.
For Newcastle, Jackson is just one of several names linked in recent weeks. Brentford’s Yoane Wissa remains a strong topic of conversation, while Wolves’ Jorgen Strand Larsen has also been mentioned, though that deal reportedly remains complicated.
Eddie Howe was forced to start the season without a recognised No.9, due to Isak's ongoing absence, as he looks to force through his switch to Liverpool. Instead, Anthony Gordon was deployed through the middle as Newcastle played out a goalless draw at Villa Park.
