FOXBORO — The Patriots signed two rookies Tuesday to replenish depth on their roster ahead of Thursday night’s preseason finale against the Giants.
The Patriots added running back Micah Bernard and defensive tackle Philip Blidi. Both rookies began their NFL careers with the Titans in the spring. Bernard was cut June 2, and Blidi was waived Aug. 17.
To make room, the Patriots released cornerback Tre Avery, another former Titan, and defensive end Jereme Robinson, who signed Aug. 10.
Avery’s stint in New England also didn’t last long. He was claimed off waivers from the 49ers on Aug. 5.
The Patriots needed running back depth with Terrell Jennings banged up and Rhamondre Stevenson, Antonio Gibson and TreVeyon Henderson unlikely to play many snaps Thursday night. Bernard joins JaMycal Hasty and Shane Watts among available Patriost running backs.
The Patriots placed defensive tackle Isaiah Iton on injured reserve this week. Blidi joins Christian Barmore, Joshua Farmer, David Olajiga, Kyle Peko, Jeremiah Pharms, Jahvaree Ritzie, Khyiris Tonga and Milton Williams on the defensive tackle depth chart.
