ESPN, Hollywood director cancel documentary over ‘creative differences’

ESPN has confirmed it is killing Spike Lee’s documentary series on ex-NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

“ESPN, Colin Kaepernick and Spike Lee have collectively decided to no longer proceed with this project as a result of certain creative differences,” the network said in a statement to Deadline. “Despite not reaching finality, we appreciate all the hard work and collaboration that went into this film.”

The series, per the report, was a look at Kaepernick’s career with the San Francisco 49ers, which came to an end in 2016 after the quarterback began kneeling during the playing of the national anthem before games to protest racial injustice in America.

Reuters broke the news after Lee told the publication on Friday that the documentary was not going to be released. “It’s not coming out. That’s all I can say,” the “Do the Right Thing” director said at a red carpet event in Beverly Hills, Calif. Asked to elaborate, Lee said, “I can’t. I signed a nondisclosure (agreement). I can’t talk about it.”

Kaepernick and journalist Jemele Hill also were producing.

“I look forward to sharing the docuseries on my life story, in addition to many other culturally impactful projects we are developing,” Kaepernick said in a statement in 2022, per Deadline.
