This is important as their squad was bloated: at one point last summer, they had listed 42 senior players on their website, with many not seen training with the rest of the team. Christopher Nkunku had looked likely to become another one to depart, but his Bayern Munich move may be under threat now.

All Parties Frustrated With Christopher Nkunku Move
Florian Plettenberg has revealed that an “internal plan has been made” regarding Nkunku’s planned move to Bayern Munich. Their Sporting Director, Max Eberl, will now focus on loan deals until deadline day. This follows the failed signing of Nick Woltemade; Stuttgart CEO Alexander Wehrle stated that “he will play for us this year…the case is closed”.

A move for Nkunku is “currently very difficult” following this plan, as Chelsea are set on letting the Frenchman go on a permanent deal this summer. “All parties are frustrated”, especially after an agreement had been met between the Bavaria and the 27-year-old. However, RB Leipzig are still in the race, as talks have been ongoing throughout, whilst other clubs hold interest as well.
Is a Leipzig Move Perfect?
An Nkunku move back to Leipzig almost seems perfect for all parties here. From Leipzig’s point of view, it seems likely that they will lose Xavi Simons to Chelsea themselves. Nkunku is a great replacement, able to play as a playmaker or across the front line. He is more than capable of creating chances for himself and others, and can fill in on wide positions or even up front if needed.

For Chelsea, letting him move back to his former club will surely aid their pursuit of Simons, which has dragged on long enough. Meanwhile, Nkunku would likely enjoy being back in the city, with familiar teammates, and would hopefully rediscover the form that saw him claim the Kicker-Torjägerkanone (top scorer award) in 2023.
