Liverpool legend Ian Rush once named 2 greatest stadiums he played in - after Anfield

When you consider the greatest players to ever don Liverpool's famous red strip, you can't ignore Ian Rush. The striker was an unbelievable marksman for the Merseyside club after arriving at Anfield in 1980.

Across two spells as a Red, with a short spell at Juventus sandwiched in between, the forward made 654 appearances for the club, finding the back of the net on 339 occasions. To this day, nobody has surpassed the Welsh icon's tally.

Leading the line for Liverpool's dominant side of the 1980s, Rush lifted five league titles and two European Cups, earning the chance to play at some of the most iconic stadiums across England and Europe. When it came to picking his favourites, though, two stood out for him aside from Anfield.

Asked to name the best football grounds he played at, Rush immediately picked the old Wembley. The home of English football for 77 years, it was closed in 2000 so that it could be torn down to make way for its modern successor.

The atmosphere, though, was legendary. Over 100,000 people flocked to the ground for football matches, and Rush frequently got to experience the cathedral of noise, having lifted three FA Cups and five League Cups at the hallowed turf.

"I used to like the old Wembley. There were 100,000 people there, it was a good atmosphere and they gave you tremendous satisfaction walking out there. When you walk out of the tunnel and onto the pitch, right up to the halfway line, it was a fantastic feeling. One you just could not put into words."

His other stadium, though, lay outside of England. Rush named AC Milan and Inter's home, the San Siro, as his other favourite from his career. It's recognised as one of football's most iconic grounds, with its high stands giving a feel similar to the Colosseum. And on match days, particularly the Derby della Madonnina, it truly comes alive.

Rush had the opportunity to play at the San Siro twice while at Juventus, losing 2-1 to Inter and picking up a point in a goalless draw against their fierce rivals. And both games highlighted why it was so special.

"I remember playing at the San Siro in Italy, and that was another fantastic stadium with a great atmosphere."

Rush's Least Favourite Stadium

Also pressed about what his least favourite stadium to play at was, Rush caveated his answer by saying that he didn't really have a least favourite ground. However, he did pick out Wimbledon FC's Plough Lane as a difficult place to visit.

Home to the famous 'Crazy Gang,' the Dons' teams were particularly aggressive. From Denis Wise to John Fashanu to Vinnie Jones and his infamous clash with Roy Keane, they would pick fights with anyone who came their way.

Rush returned to Merseyside from Juventus shortly after the Reds had been shockingly beaten by the south London club in the 1988 FA Cup final, and ended up facing Wimbledon 15 times in total. And he admitted that he didn't enjoy away days in the English capital.

"The old Wimbledon [stadium] wasn't the best to go to. It was always hard to play against them."
