Arsenal’s pursuit of Real Madrid winger Rodrygo has hit a standstill despite months of speculation linking the Brazilian with a move to the Premier League.
The Gunners have reportedly monitored Rodrygo since May, with exploratory talks held on the player’s side. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano described the 24-year-old as a “dream target” for Mikel Arteta, particularly if Gabriel Martinelli were to leave the Emirates. David Ornstein similarly noted that Arsenal’s ability to pursue the deal would hinge on Martinelli’s future.
Arteta himself hinted at the club’s desire for more “firepower” in attack, though he stopped short of naming Rodrygo. Real Madrid, however, are believed to value the forward at around €80 million to €90 million.

Suggestions of a blockbuster swap involving Arsenal defender William Saliba were quickly dismissed, with the North London side unwilling to sacrifice their defensive cornerstone. A loan move with an option to buy was also considered, but Madrid’s reluctance and Rodrygo’s own preference to remain in Spain made such an arrangement highly unlikely.

Rodrygo’s future became further clouded by the arrival of Xabi Alonso as Madrid’s new head coach. Despite speculation, Alonso has praised the winger’s progress and insists he remains part of his plans as Los Blancos prepare to face Osasuna in their La Liga opener on Tuesday.

“There are a lot of rumours this summer,” Alonso said. “He looks good to me. I’m counting on everyone, and I want them to be committed to the team and at 100%. That’s what occupies me right now.”
Rodrygo faces fierce competition for playing time, with Kylian Mbappe, Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham all ahead in Alonso’s attacking setup. New arrival Franco Mastantuono has also impressed the Madrid boss, who suggested the 18-year-old could feature against Osasuna after showing maturity and quality since joining the club.
Despite links to Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham earlier this month, Rodrygo remains in the Spanish capital for now. While Real Madrid were said to be open to his exit, the club have not actively sought to move him on, and Alonso’s latest comments indicate the winger will continue to be part of the squad heading into the new campaign.
