Luke Edwards shares Newcastle update after Alexander Isak breaks silence in statement

Alexander Isak has finally broken his silence on his situation at Newcastle United.

Isak wants to leave Newcastle United amid interest from Liverpool and missed their Premier League opener away at Aston Villa.

Newcastle fans aimed angry chants towards Isak, who is fully fit after recovering from the “minor thigh injury” that ruled him out of pre-season.

As it stands, Newcastle are still planning to keep Isak. He has three years left on his contract and Liverpool have not yet met their valuation anyway.

Reports have claimed that Newcastle need to sign two strikers before they agree to sell the Sweden international, so it remains to be seen if his public statement changes things behind the scenes.

He has, however, now spoken and Luke Edwards has delivered an interesting response.

Alexander Isak’s bombshell Newcastle United message

Isak missed the PFA Awards for the 2024/25 season, in which he was named in the Team of the Year after scoring 23 goals for Newcastle.

The 25-year-old was also up for the Player of the Year Award, which was won by Mohamed Salah.

On his Instagram story, Isak posted a message reading: “I’m proud to be recognised by my fellow professionals with a place in the PFA Premier League Team of the Season for 2024/25. First and foremost I want to thank my teammates and everyone at Newcastle United who has supported me along the way. I’m not at the ceremony tonight.

“With everything going on, it didn’t feel right to be there. I’ve kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken. That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn’t reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors.

“The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading. When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue. That’s where things are for me right now – and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself”.

Edwards, who has constantly stressed that Isak isn’t for sale when writing in The Daily Telegraph this summer, suggested it was the “last move available to him”. Indeed, it does now seem as if he is running out of options.

Edwards then added that Newcastle continue to insist the player simply isn’t for sale and that they will not be bullied into letting him go.

What promise did Newcastle United break to Alexander Isak?

Isak talks about broken promises in his statement.

Clearly, it’s difficult to know exactly what is going on behind the scenes but that would appear to relate to an issue back in 2024.

Indeed, Isak was annoyed he didn’t get a new Newcastle contract last year after a supposed promise from former director Amanda Staveley.

Staveley then left the club and incoming sporting director Paul Mitchell reportedly didn’t think Isak – who had four years left on his deal at the time – desperately needed a renewal.

That now looks a mistake but, to Mitchell’s credit, the club were dealing with PSR issues at the time.

Isak has every right to want to leave Newcastle. What he cannot decide, however, is when he is sold, exactly who to and for what price.
