Arsenal ace crowned league’s best as Ballon d’or shouts grow louder

Mariona Caldentey has been voted the Women’s PFA Players’ Player of the Year, capping off a brilliant first campaign in English football with Arsenal.

The Spain international edged ahead of team-mate Alessia Russo to secure the accolade during Tuesday’s awards night, further confirming her as one of the league’s brightest stars.

Caldentey hit nine goals and registered five assists in 20 Women’s Super League matches, helping the Gunners finish second in the standings after a strong push.

Her consistent displays and ability to influence big occasions convinced fellow professionals to select her as the league’s outstanding performer for the season.

Competition from some of the league’s best

This latest recognition comes only months after Caldentey lifted the WSL Player of the Season award in May, making her success even more significant.

Russo, who shared the Golden Boot title last term, made the shortlist but narrowly lost out to her Arsenal colleague in the voting..

Other nominees included Chelsea’s Erin Cuthbert, who stood out in their unbeaten title defence, as well as Mary Fowler, the league’s assist leader with Manchester City.

Manchester United’s Phallon Tullis-Joyce also featured after claiming the Golden Glove alongside Hannah Hampton, while City midfielder Yui Hasegawa gained recognition for her control and creativity.

European triumph and international impact

Caldentey’s contributions extended well beyond the domestic game, as she excelled on the European stage with Arsenal in their Champions League campaign.

She found the net seven times and created two more goals across 11 appearances, guiding the club to their first European crown since 2007.

Her performance against Barcelona in the final was especially memorable, as Arsenal overcame her former team to lift the trophy.

The 29-year-old also enjoyed a strong summer with Spain, playing an important role in their run to the Euro 2025 final.

Her club and country achievements now put her in serious contention for the Ballon d’Or Féminin later this year.

Caldentey will be eager to continue her fine form in her second season, as Arsenal aim to win their first WSL title in six years.
