The Frenchman scored the only goal, but Xabi Alonso's side were otherwise poor in their season-opening win
Kylian Mbappe grabbed the only goal in a sluggish Real Madrid showing, converting from the spot to seal a 1-0 win for Los Blancos over Osasuna.
Madrid endured a rather slow start. Osasuna were happy to sit back and invite pressure, while the home side had few attacking ideas. Dean Huijsen offered Los Blancos' best attempt of the first half, forcing a tidy save with a long range effort.
Mbappe opened things up with a sublime piece of skill, cutting inside his man before being clipped in the box. The referee showed no hesitation, pointing to the spot - and the Frenchman rolled it home. Los Blancos probed and prodded in search of a second. Arda Guler lashed one narrowly over. Mbappe caused problems on the right. But a second never came, and Alonso seemed content to rotate as the minutes wound down. New signing Franco Mastantuono turned in a lively showing, but Madrid were otherwise quiet as the clock ticked over.
This was far from convincing. It wasn't even particularly good for long stretches. But Los Blancos will take the win to open what will be a long season.
