“The relationship can't continue”: Isak breaks silence with bombshell Newcastle statement

Liverpool target Alexander Isak has revealed that he "can't continue" at Newcastle United and has accused the club of "broken promises" during the summer transfer window.

Speculation over the 25-year-old’s future of Isak has been rife for some time, but talk of an exit from St James’ Park intensified towards the end of last month when reports claimed that the Sweden international had expressed a desire to leave the Magpies and explore his options.

Isak refused to play for Newcastle during pre-season and is understood to have gone on strike to try and force through a transfer to Premier League champions Liverpool before the September 1 deadline.

The striker, who is currently training away from Eddie Howe’s first team, also decided to skip Tuesday night's PFA awards ceremony in Manchester due to his situation at Newcastle, despite being named in the Team of the Year.

However, Isak has now broken his silence, releasing a strongly-worded statement on Instagram in which he has said that he has "lost trust" in Newcastle.

Liverpool target Isak: “Change is in the best interests of everyone”

The statement read: “I'm proud to be recognised by my fellow professionals with a place in the PFA Premier League Team of the Season for 2024-25.

“First and foremost I want to thank my teammates and everyone at Newcastle United who has supported me along the way.

“I'm not at the ceremony tonight. With everything going on, it didn't feel right to be there.

“I've kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken. That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn't reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors.

“The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading.

“When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue. That's where things are for me right now – and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself”.

Liverpool 'sanction' British-record bid for Isak 'next week'

A total of 19 days have passed since Newcastle rejected Liverpool’s £110m bid for Isak, but Arne Slot’s side remain interested in prising the striker away from St James’ Park.

According to***The Sun***, Liverpool have ‘sanctioned’ a British-record £130m move for Isak next week and they are confident that Newcastle will let the wantaway Swede leave the club.

It is understood that the Reds do not intend to submit their improved offer until after facing the Magpies at St James’ Park in their next Premier League fixture on Monday.

It has also been suggested that Liverpool will consider alternatives to Isak if a deal cannot be struck with Newcastle, who are still thought to value the striker at around £150m.

Liverpool are also keen to sign defender Marc Guehi, and the potential arrival of the Crystal Palace captain and Isak at Anfield would take their summer spending to an extraordinary £466m having already signed Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Giovanni Leoni, Will Wright and Armin Pecsi.

Isak, who was left out of Newcastle’s squad for the 0-0 draw at Aston Villa last weekend, has established himself as one of Europe’s best strikers with the Magpies and had been a fans’ favourite at St James’ Park before this summer’s transfer saga.

The former Real Sociedad striker has contributed with 62 goals and 11 assists in 109 appearances for Newcastle across all competitions since joining in 2022, including 54 goals in 86 Premier League outings, with 23 of those netted in 34 matches last season.
