Colts name journeymen QB starter over 2023 first-round pick

The months-long speculation about who the starting quarterback will be for the Indianapolis Colts is over.

Daniel Jones was named QB1 on Tuesday.

Jones won the top spot over Anthony Richardson, who the Colts selected with the fourth-overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

After six seasons with the New York Giants, Jones signed a one-year deal with Indianapolis in March. The 28-year-old will now get a chance to revive his career after an underwhelming 24-44-1 record in six seasons in the Meadowlands.

As for Richardson, he will need to wait to get his shot at proving he can be a starter. He’s been limited to 15 games in two seasons for the Colts.

“You gotta respect the decision,” Richardson told reporters, via 107.5 The Fan’s Kevin Bowen. “They feel like he’s a better fit for the team, a better fit for the outcome of us winning. You gotta respect it and just keep working. It doesn’t undermine all the other work I’ve been putting in, it doesn’t say that I haven’t improved. I’m proud of the improvement I’ve made.”

Richardson’s career has been marred with injuries, including a dislocated pinky finger this summer. He also injured his shoulder in March at the start of OTAs. In 2023, Richardson underwent season-ending shoulder surgery in October.

The Colts benched Richardson in Week 9 and started Joe Flacco after the former briefly took himself out of Indianapolis’ loss to the Houston Texans.

Whether Jones is the answer to the Colts’ quarterback questions remains to be seen, but it’s clear they’re confident in the veteran to lead them in 2025.
