Former Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel faces criticism over recent comments

With the 94th overall pick in round three of the 2025 NFL draft, the Cleveland Browns selected Oregon Ducks quarterback Dillon Gabriel.

And though he has yet to play a single snap in the NFL regular season yet, he's already made headlines for a cryptic comment he made that many assumed were directed at fellow rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders, who has faced claims that he only got to the league because of his legendary father, Deion, who was his head coach at Colorado.

The comment came after Cleveland's second preseason game and made Gabriel's NFL intentions clear.

"You know, there’s entertainers and there’s competitors, and I totally understand that. But my job is to compete. And that’s what I’m focused on doing,” [Gabriel said](https://twitter.com/ESPNCleveland/status/1956800570649370731).

Stephen A. Smith Called Gabriel's Comment "Stupid"

--------------------------------------------------

Though Gabriel cleared the air and said his comments were not aimed at the Colorado quarterback, analyst Stephen A. Smith was still not a fan of the quote, and, in typical Stephen A. fashion, let him know it.

“I never believed he was talking about Shedeur Sanders. I totally believed him when he said he was talking about the media,” [Smith said](https://twitter.com/awfulannouncing/status/1957454671791964499). “Having said that, Dillon Gabriel, respectfully, it was stupid. A very dumb comment to make. It was a stupid, idiotic, immature comment because clearly he is feeling the heat because a lot of people are talking about how Shedeur should be QB No. 2."

QB No. 2 is all that either of them is going to accomplish for now, as the Cleveland Browns recently announced that 40-year-old veteran signal caller Joe Flacco would be leading Cleveland onto the field Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals.
