Jake Bobo only had two receptions in the Seattle Seahawks’ 33-16 preseason win over the Kansas City Chiefs, but he made them count.

Making them count is something the third-year wide receiver really needs to do, too, based on the way the Seahawks’ roster is shaping up in the first year under new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak.
Bobo, who the Seahawks signed as an undrafted free agent out of UCLA in 2023, had a pair of touchdown catches of 12 yards apiece in Friday’s game, and there was a lot to like about each of them.
The first was a screen pass where Bobo showed some shiftiness on his way to diving to paydirt.

The second showcased Bobo’s ability to make a move and get open, shaking a Chiefs defender just enough to create separation and jump for a pass from quarterback Drew Lock near the sideline in the end zone.

Asked Monday which Seahawks player helped their case to make the initial 53-man roster with their performance in Friday’s game, Seattle Sports’ Brock Huard pointed directly at Bobo. But in explaining why he chose Bobo, the former NFL QB highlighted just what Bobo is up against.
“He’s in for a dog fight depending on the numbers game and how many running backs they are going to keep,” Huard said, “because now you’ve got a couple fullbacks/tight ends right that you’re going to keep around as well.”
It’s a solid point, because the Seahawks haven’t utilized a fullback in recent years, but that is now a featured position in Kubiak’s wide zone offensive scheme. Not only that, but one of those potential fullback/tight end hybrid players – Eric Saubert – had a key block on Bobo’s first touchdown Friday.
Saubert has been on the radar since training camp opener for both Huard and his co-host, Mike Salk. If he makes the Seahawks’ roster, that’s another position taking away from a potential spot for Bobo or fellow wide receiver Dareke Young. And there’s also the fact that the Seahawks are expected to keep three quarterbacks after signing Lock to back up starter Sam Darnold and drafting Jalen Milroe in the third round.
“He’s done everything the right way,” Huard said about Saubert, who is entering his ninth NFL season. “You would think you’d want somebody with his experience around, too, because (tight end AJ Barner) is just a second-year (player), (tight end Elijah) Arroyo’s just a rookie. So you keep him and then it’s, well, (fullback) Brady Russell’s gonna be on this team, (fullback) Robbie Ouzts is gonna be on this team. What about the running backs?
“I mean, it’s a good dilemma to have. These are hard decisions to make.”
That means Bobo – and Young, who had 52 yards on three receptions Friday – still have a lot of pressure on them to play well in the upcoming preseason finale Saturday at Green Bay.
“(Bobo) can read the room, and Dareke Young can read the room,” Huard said. “Those guys both, they went at it (Friday), and they’re gonna go at it this week and that’s going to be a difficult decision. But I think Jake really, really helped himself with his performance Friday night.”
