Anthony Richardson, the 4th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, will begin the 2025 season as a backup. Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen on Tuesday named Daniel Jones the team’s starting quarterback.
Richardson hasn’t quite lived up to expectations in Indy. That’s partially due to injury. In 2023, he missed Week 3 after suffering a concussion the previous game. And in Week 5, he sprained his AC joint, ending his season after just 4 starts. In 2024, he appeared in 11 games, missing 2 games with an oblique injury. He was briefly benched later in the season before returning to the lineup.
Now, Richardson’s starting job has been handed to Jones, the former New York Giants QB and the No. 6 pick in 2019. Richardson’s agent, Deiric Jackson, responded to the news, saying the team and his client “have a lot to discuss.”
“Trust is a big factor and that is, at best, questionable right now,” Jackson told ESPN’s Stephen Holder. “Anthony came back and made the improvements in the areas he needed to improve. And by all accounts, he had a great camp.”
Jackson pointed to Richardson’s clutch performances late in the season in 2024 to further make the case for his client.
“When they needed a big play last year, whose hands did they put the ball in? Anthony’s,” Jackson said.
Richardson’s future with the Colts remains to be seen. But it’s clear that the former Florida quarterback’s brief time in the NFL has been quite disappointing.
