Liverpool target Alexander Isak has effectively primed his own exit from Newcastle United by releasing a pointed statement overnight. The 25-year-old has made it clear 'the relationship can't continue' while waiting for Liverpool to make their next move before an impending September 1 deadline.

The Reds opened up with a £110m bid on August 1, but were subsequently rejected by their rivals. Since then, the saga has been at the mercy of intense speculation as one constant has remained; Isak is not in Newcastle training, nor is he available for match selection with the Premier League season underway.

But the striker has now decided to tell his side of the story and, possibly, force through a move to Liverpool come the end of this ordeal.

Here, the ECHO brings together the message Isak issued to his social media followers with Newcastle's (reported) immediate response;

Isak's statement

Posted in white text, on a black canvas, Isak's statement posted to his Instagram stories read: "I'm proud to be recognised by my fellow professionals with a place in the PFA Premier League Team of the Season for 2024/25.

"First and foremost I want to thank all my teammates and everyone at Newcastle United who has supported me along the way.

"I'm not at the ceremony tonight. With everything going on, it didn't feel right to be there.

"I've kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken.

"That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn't reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors. The reality is that promises were made - and the club has known my position for a long time.

"To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading.

"When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue. That's where things are for me right now - and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.

"Alexander Isak."

Newcastle stance

In the aftermath of Isak breaking his silence, The Telegraph reporter Luke Edwards outlined what he argues to be the Magpies' continued stance on the striker's potential exit before the September 1 deadline.

"Newcastle United continue to insist this evening, despite Alexander Isak's accusations on Instagram, that the player is not for sale," Edwards wrote on X.

"They are not going to be bullied or back down, either #nufc."

As previously reported by the ECHO, Liverpool haven't intended to move again until they receive a clear hint that their rivals will soften their outlook on the situation.
