Chris Sutton: Keeping Sargent is huge to City's play-off chances

It's nice to have the season up and running now at all levels - the Championship is two games in, the Premier League kicked off at the weekend and the Scottish leagues have been underway for a little while now.

With most of the players having been in action and the teams completing at least one outing, we at least know to some degree where things stand. The Canaries also seem to have got their feet under the table with two wins in a week, and I was impressed with their 2-1 win over Portsmouth on Saturday.

I remember playing at Fratton Park; the stands are tight to the pitch, the fans are right on top of you and they make more than their fair share of noise as well! To win under those circumstances was impressive, and although there was the 2-1 victory over Watford in the Carabao Cup, it's always freeing as a player to get that first one in the league.

After John Swift hit the crossbar in the dying moments of the game, Vladan Kovacevic saved the penalty and City spent plenty of time clinging on, that dressing room will have been absolutely buzzing when they got in after the final whistle. They'll have felt fulfilled.

But what was the common theme from that afternoon to Watford and the disappointing start against Millwall? Josh Sargent goals. He's got three in three now, underlining again how important he is to his side with nearly two weeks still left of the transfer window.

Players like Sargent are the reason why it's so hard to predict where clubs are going to finish before the end of the window. I'm not being negative, but I think even with him there's no guarantee of reaching the play-offs for Norwich. Ipswich have come down with a good squad, Frank Lampard and Coventry will have a go again, there's moneybags Wrexham and this weekend's opponents Middlesbrough, who have started with two good wins.

There's a lot of competition for those top-six places, but having someone like Sargent gives you a fighting chance. Fans will be worried, though, that there's still potential for clubs to panic and go back into the market late on. Could a Premier League side lose their first couple of games, get worried and dip into the Championship for the man I believe is the best striker in it?

That would be my fear, although of course Liam Manning will have a contingency plan. I like the new head coach - he came across well when he was on our Monday Night Club show and people I speak to within the game talk him up.

Maybe his potential Sargent replacement is Mathias Kvistgaarden. They've certainly spent a few quid on him and there were a lot of clubs interested in signing him this summer.

But he looks like a different sort of forward to the American; he's a bit smaller and maybe more of a dribbler. He could end up being a great signing, and there have been good signs in the first two games, but if he's to be the main man then that will require some adaptation.

Sargent is a real all-rounder. He's not absolutely rapid but he's a strong runner; he can hold the ball up well and did so against Portsmouth; his finishing has improved an awful lot and he's clearly a goal-scorer. I'm not sure there's anyone else in the squad who can give you all of that.

So if City are to reach their goal of play-off qualification - a tough task for any side in a dense battle at the top of the Championship - it does feel very important that they hold onto their number nine, particularly after the start he's had.

Nunez is vital

Another player who I think is important to the City side but has been the subject of speculation is Marcelino Nunez. He was good again on the south coast after scoring in that Watford game, and the reaction when he went down injured probably tells you a lot about the role he plays in that team.

Manning does have Jacob Wright available to him, while Mirko Topic has impressed so far and club captain Kenny McLean is due back from injury soon, but we've all seen how important quality in depth is. Nunez really provides that in midfield.

He is, of course, in the final year of his contract, and so I understand that if a decent offer comes in then it's difficult to turn it down and let him go for free. Part of me feels like it never should have been allowed to get to this stage contractually, although I don't know the ins and outs and that could also be his decision.

Whatever happens, I think he's a good player, and one who Norwich should try to avoid losing if they can. There's been talk of interest from Turkey and that clearly hasn't turned into anything too serious yet, but there could be a decision to make there for Ben Knapper.

Nunez certainly isn't as influential as Sargent - no one is - but if they're to make a push for promotion then they could also do with having him with them for the ride.
