Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has lauded the performance of David Raya following Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday.
The Gunners picked up a hard-fought victory over the Red Devils at Old Trafford.
They were far from their best and had to be vigilant at the back to secure a clean sheet after Riccardo Calafiori’s early goal. Raya was adjudged the man of the match.
The Spaniard made seven saves and denied debutants Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo from scoring. He also commanded his box with two high claims and one crucial punch.
Hence, there are no surprises that Shearer picked him in his Premier League Team of the Week.
He said on Raya: “Outstanding as he kept Manchester United at bay, making fabulous saves to deny debutants Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo and earn a clean sheet.”
Raya, who had an 8/10 rating from Sofascore against Ruben Amorim’s side last weekend, has won the Premier League Golden Glove in the previous two campaigns.
He has made a brilliant start this term with a well-earned clean sheet against a lively United side.
The Red Devils were the better team at Old Trafford, but Arsenal got the job done. The Gunners take on Leeds United at home on Saturday and will be eyeing back-to-back wins.
Manager Mikel Arteta will expect a more improved showing in the final third. Arsenal were out of sync against United, with plenty of passes going astray on the counter-attack.
Viktor Gyokeres showed glimpses of his ability with his physical strength and link-up play, but lacked the service from his teammates. We should see an improvement versus Leeds.
