West Ham are interested in making a move for Barcelona midfielder Marc Casado in the closing weeks of the window.

Graham Potter is keen to add another midfielder to his options, with Edson Alvarez looking set to join Fenerbahce after agreeing terms with the Jose Mourinho-led side.

West Ham are closely monitoring Casado’s situation, with a bid before the transfer window closes not ruled out.

West Ham are also considering another move for Mateus Fernandes, after Southampton rejected an opening £30million bid.

Barcelona set £25.8m asking price for Marc Casado

Casado broke through as one of Barcelona’s most promising young players last season, starting 20 games for Hansi Flick’s team before a ligament injury in March.

The Spain international plays at the base of the midfield and, as can be said of most players to emerge from La Masia, is incredibly technically refined.

The 21-year-old is massively press-resistant and constantly looks to break lines with his passes, sometimes preferring to drive with the ball himself.

And that is not to mention Casado’s defensive ability. The midfielder is short and slight on the eye, but can often be spotted flying into sliding tackles and muscling his opponents off the ball.

Many of the midfielder’s minutes for Barcelona last season came in the absence of Frenkie De Jong and Marc Bernal, but both players are due to compete for minutes this season.

That could leave Casado out of the fold, and likelier to consider a move in the closing days of the transfer window.

On 20 August, Sport reported that Barcelona will not stand in the 21-year-old’s way if he wants to leave, and would expect around £25.8m.

But a departure would be difficult to consider for Casado – the midfielder is a big fan of the Spanish giants and is desperate to continue living his dream at Barcelona.

Marc Casado would be a huge coup for West Ham

Casado is undoubtedly among the most exciting young midfielders in world football, and West Ham fans should exercise caution when getting excited about a potential deal.

The Spaniard will, in all likelihood, end up staying at Barcelona.

But should West Ham pull off the unthinkable and land Casado for £26m, they will have completed, arguably, the signing of the transfer window.
