Alexander Isak has publicly declared his relationship with Newcastle United “can’t continue,” prompting a swift and strong response from the club as the striker’s transfer saga escalates.
The Sweden international, who scored 27 goals last season, addressed the situation for the first time on Tuesday in a statement on social media. Isak said “broken promises” had led to a complete breakdown in trust and made clear he sees no future at St James’ Park.
“The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time,” Isak wrote. “To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading. When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue. That’s where things are for me right now and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.”
The striker, who was left out of Newcastle’s squad for the opening-day draw at Aston Villa and missed the pre-season tour of Asia, also skipped Tuesday’s PFA awards, despite being named in the Premier League team of the season.
Liverpool had a £110m bid for him rejected earlier this month and are yet to return with an improved offer, which is expected to happen at some point between now and the closing of the summer transfer window at the start of September.
Newcastle responded with an official statement the same evening, rejecting Isak’s claims and stressing that no assurances of a summer exit had ever been made.
“We are disappointed to have been alerted to a social media post by Alexander Isak,” the club said. “We are clear in response that Alex remains under contract and that no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer. We want to keep our best players… We do not foresee those conditions being met.”
With the transfer window entering its final two weeks, the standoff has laid bare a fractured relationship between club and player that now appears beyond repair.
