Villarreal are reportedly contemplating whether to make an approach for Leeds United defender Pascal Struijk.
In recent days, the Yellow Submarine have been heavily linked with a move for Renato Veiga and are said to have agreed personal terms with the Chelsea centre-back.
As it stands, though, the two clubs are struggling to reach a compromise over a fee, essentially leaving the La Liga outfit to consider other options.
According to Football Insider, Villarreal have seemingly turned their attention to Struijk, who possesses similar traits to that of Portugal international Veiga.
On Monday night, Struijk started the 1-0 victory over Everton in their Premier League opener, Daniel Farke ready to retain him as first-choice in his backline.
However, the 26-year-old only has a contract at Elland Road until 2027, it plausible that he may want to take on a new challenge after just entering his eighth campaign with the Yorkshire giants.
Over the summer transfer window, Leeds have taken their centre-back tally up to five, leaving the door ajar for Struijk to leave if a suitable offer is made.

Forest want Norwich defender?
Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest are allegedly looking at ways to strengthen in the full-back areas and have identified Norwich City's Kellen Fisher as a potential target.
Despite Nuno Espirito Santo's recent concerns, Forest have been proactive in the transfer market with six additions that can make an immediate impact on the first team.
Nevertheless, the Portuguese stressed last week that he was still keen to add at least one more full-back to his senior ranks before the September 1 deadline.
As per Football Insider, a bid could be made for Fisher over the next 12 days, Forest also able to add a homegrown talent to their group.
England Under-20 international Fisher has made 49 appearances in the Championship since progressing through the academy setup, contributing five assists.
While a contract is in place until 2028, the 21-year-old has only been provided with two substitute outings across the club's opening double-header in this season's Championship.

Atalanta end Muniz chase
Atalanta BC have reportedly ended their efforts to secure a deal for Fulham forward Rodrigo Muniz.
Although Muniz came off the substitutes' bench to score Fulham's equaliser against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, it had been well-documented that he has been keen on a switch to Serie A.
Despite an offer of £34.5m allegedly being on the table, Fulham chose to rebuff it, the expectation having been that Atalanta would return to the table.
Instead, according to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Atalanta will be signing Lecce frontman Nikola Krstovic.
While a transfer fee has not been revealed, it is expected to be lower than what the Serie A giants would have paid for Muniz.
Fulham must now attempt to negotiate fresh terms with Muniz courtesy of the Brazilian having less than 12 months remaining on his contract.
