Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers outlines World Cup dream after winning PFA prize

The 23-year-old became just the fifth Villa player to win the prize but promised the best is still to come as he aims to continue his remarkable rise.

Rogers now wants to play for England at next summer’s World Cup, with the target of winning the senior player of the year award 12 months from now.

He said: “I want to be back here next year picking up a different trophy. That’s the aim, that’s the goal.

“I want to be at the World Cup. I want to play for my country. It’s the biggest stage, the biggest honour and I have a lot to do to get there.

“I know that. I am competing against a load of great players and amazing players every week. It’s my turn to show what I am all about.”

Halesowen-born Rogers was recognised by his fellow professionals after a superb 2023-24 season, in which he scored 14 goals in all competitions for Villa and registered 16 assists.

It was the Albion academy product’s first full campaign in the Premier League, after he joined Villa from Middlesbrough for an initial £8million in January, 2024.

Reflecting on the speed of his journey, Rogers said: “The fact it’s happened so quickly has helped me. Everything’s just coming thick and fast and I’m trying to do what I can on the fly and just try and enjoy it and live in the moment.

“Maybe one day I’ll look back on it all and dissect it and how it came about, but right now I’m just living life, enjoying it and just taking every day and keeping a smile on my face and moving forward.

“It’s all happened so quickly and so fast, but I suppose that’s down to hard work and ambition which I’ve always had, and a dream and still trying to live that dream.

“It’s a really nice moment and I just want to keep going.”

Rogers is the first Villa player since James Milner in 2010 to win the young player award. Andy Gray, Gary Shaw and Ashley Young are the club’s other previous winners.

He continued: “Later down the line, I want to be one of those incredible players that people speak about, so to do that I’ve got to do what they did and what they followed after.

“It’s a nice recognition but there’s more to win, and I can’t wait.”
