Newcastle United's Alexander Isak celebrates scoring their side's first goal of the game from the penalty spot during the Premier League match at St James' Park
Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak has released a statement over his future amid transfer interest from Liverpool
Liverpool transfer target Alexander Isak has released a bombshell statement on his future, accusing his current club Newcastle United of ‘broken promises’. The Reds have seen a £110 million plus add-ons bid turned down by the Magpies.
The player has not been part of the Newcastle squad amid the speculation surrounding his future. But the club are holding firm on their stance and that would have to change for Liverpool to return with another offer.
On Tuesday night, Isak was named in the PFA Premier League team of the year, he was not in attendance at the ceremony, but released a strong statement just minutes after the announcement.
"I'm proud to be recognised by my fellow professionals with a place in the PFA Premier League Team of the Season for 2024/25,” he said.
"First and foremost I want to thank all my teammates and everyone at Newcastle United who has supported me along the way. I'm not at the ceremony tonight.
"With everything going on, it didn't feel right to be there.
"I've kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken.
"That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn't reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors. The reality is that promises were made - and the club has known my position for a long time.
"To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading.
"When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue. That's where things are for me right now - and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself."
Newcastle have since responded with their own statement. “We are clear in response that Alex remains under contract and that no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer,” they said.
We want to keep our best players, but we also understand players have their own wishes and we listen to their views. As explained to Alex and his representatives, we must always take into consideration the best interests of Newcastle United, the team and our supporters in all decisions and we have been clear that the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired.
"We do not foresee those conditions being met.
"This is a proud football club with proud traditions and we strive to retain our family feel. Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his teammates."

Liverpool will hope that the latest move by Isak will convince Newcastle to soften their stance on a potential sale. If that’s the case, it could help Arne Slot to build a dream attack.
Summer signings Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike have made positive starts to life at Anfield. Ekitike has scored in both the Community Shield and the his one Premier League appearance so farm while also providing an assist in the 4-2 win over Bournemouth.
The Reds have plenty of players to provide support to the main striker. The arrival of Wirtz and the integration of Rio Ngumoha in the first team as well as the revival of Federico Chiesa, who scored a crucial goal against Bournemouth, means that Harvey Elliott could be allowed to leave the club in search of more game time.
Up front, the addition of Isak would provide both competition and support to Ekitike. With Champions League football again on the horizon, having two strikers who are proven goalscorers will be a big boost to Slot ahead of a long season.
Given the money that could be spent on Isak, he is likely to come in as first choice, meaning that despite the strong start to his Liverpool career, Ekitike could find himself on the bench.
