Though 2025 has belonged undoubtedly to Scottie Scheffler and his dominant performances that’s produced five wins and an impressive two major championships, the emotional highlight of the golf season belonged to Rory McIlroy.
The 36-year-old’s electric moment when he fell to his knees on the eighteenth green at Augusta National, completing the career grand slam with a birdie over Justin Rose still gives chills to many of us golf fans.
So after such a memorable moment, has the idea of returning to Augusta National to soak in the fruits of his labor crossed the superstar’s mind?
“Yeah, I’ve already planned a couple of trips with some friends or some members beforehand,” McIlroy said in his press conference on Tuesday at the Tour Championship in Atlanta. “Yeah, it’ll be — it’ll probably be a little emotional. I definitely have planned one trip that my dad (Gerry) is going to come on as well, and my dad wasn’t there when I won, so I think that’ll be a cool moment to be with him.”
McIlroy took seventeen tries to finally win that coveted green jacket, so one would only imagine the sentimental feelings and emotions will be at a high level when he does make it back to the drive down Magnolia Lane.
“Yeah, it’ll be emotional. Like I still get a little emotional thinking about it,” McIlroy said. “But it’ll be really cool. To go there, I have a lot of members there that have become good friends over the years, and to be able to enjoy that with them and play the golf course again and sort of reminisce over the good and the bad that happened over the course of the week, yeah, that’ll be really cool.”
In the meantime, the three-time FedEx Cup champion has another big tournament in front of him in Georgia as he and the assembled top 30 in the FedEx Cup Playoffs take on East Lake Golf Club and battle it out for the FedEx Cup Thursday through Sunday.
