Wall retires after 11 seasons

John Wall is retiring after 11 NBA seasons. Wall, 34, played most of his career with the Washington Wizards after they made him the first overall pick in the 2010 draft out of Kentucky. The five-time All-Star point guard finishes his NBA career with averages of 18.7 points and 8.9 assists per game. Wall also played for the Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Clippers. In his best season, he averaged 23.1 points and 10.7 assists for the Wizards in 2016-17 and was named All-NBA third team. Wall was one of the fastest, most athletic point guards during his prime -- he was the 2014 Slam Dunk champion. He also made the All-Defensive second team in 2015. Injuries plagued the second half of his career -- after an All-Star appearance in 2017-18, a season he played just 41 games, he made 106 appearance across the next five years. The Washington Post reported he will join Prime Video, Amazon's streaming service, as an analyst on its studio show during its first season showing NBA games.

Fever guard out for season

The injury-riddled Indiana Fever suffered another blow Tuesday when they announced guard Sophie Cunningham would miss the rest of this season with a knee injury. She was hurt during Sunday's 99-93 victory at Connecticut, which brought the Fever to 19-16 on the season. Team officials did not provide details about the injury, which made her Indiana's third player lost for the season in August. Fever guard Sydney Colson tore the ACL in her left knee on Aug. 7 in a game at Phoenix, while guard Aari McDonald broke a bone in her right foot in the same game. And two-time All-Star guard Caitlin Clark still has not played since injuring her right groin in mid-July.

Pacers extend Carlisle

The Indiana Pacers rewarded Coach Rick Carlisle with a multiyear contract extension Tuesday following the team's surprising run to the NBA Finals. Team officials made the announcement about one month before the Pacers open training camp. The Pacers provided no additional details about contract terms. Carlisle, 65, enters this season needing seven wins to become the 11th coach in league history with 1,000 career wins. His 555 career wins with Dallas, where he won a title in 2010-11, are a franchise record and his 338 wins with the Pacers are the most in the franchise's NBA history. He also served as an assistant on Larry Bird's coaching staff in 1999-2000 -- the only other time Indiana reached the NBA Finals. They forced Oklahoma City to Game 7 in the 2025 NBA Finals, but couldn't close out the series after two-time All-Star guard Tyrese Haliburton suffered a torn Achilles tendon in the first quarter of the final game.

Irish hand keys to Carr

Notre Dame Coach Marcus Freeman named second-year quarterback CJ Carr his starting quarterback Tuesday, ending the preseason competition with Kenny Minchey. The announcement was made on the official social media account of the Fighting Irish football program. Carr made one appearance for the Fighting Irish during last season's run to the national championship game but has not thrown a college pass. He played in the second half of a 66-7 rout at Purdue last season. He was a three-time all-state quarterback in Michigan and is the son of former Michigan football player Jason Carr and the grandson of former Wolverines Coach Lloyd Carr. Steve Angeli, the top backup to Riley Leonard last season, also was in the battle during the spring. But he transferred to Syracuse after spring ball, turning the expected three-man battle into a two-man competition. Angeli was named Syracuse's starter earlier this week. Elsewhere, Bear Bachmeier was named the starter for BYU on Tuesday and is slated to become the school's first true freshman starter at the position. Bachmeier emerged from a three-way competition to replace 2024 starter Jake Retzlaff, who transferred to Tulane after facing a seven-game suspension by the school for admitting to consensual sex -- a violation of BYU's honor code -- while defending himself in a since-dismissed sexual assault lawsuit. That left the Cougars with a competition between Bachmeier, Utah State transfer McCae Hillstead and Western Michigan transfer Treyson Bourguet.

Texas Tech loses top RB

Texas Tech running back Quinten Joyner, part of the heralded class of 22 transfers for the Red Raiders, sustained a season-ending knee injury in a scrimmage, Coach Joey McGuire said on the school's podcast. McGuire said Monday that Joyner's injury was a "noncontact deal," after the redshirt sophomore went down during the scrimmage at Jones AT&T Stadium over the weekend. Joyner, a Southern Cal transfer who went to high school in Texas, was expected to be part of a potential rotation as No. 23 Texas Tech tries to replace Tahj Brooks, the school's all-time leading rusher who was taken in the sixth round of the NFL Draft by Cincinnati. Joyner entered preseason camp atop a depth chart that included two more sophomores in J'Koby Williams and Cameron Dickey. Williams had 123 yards rushing, including a 54-yard touchdown, in last season's 39-26 Liberty Bowl loss to Arkansas after Brooks opted out of the game. As a redshirt freshman at Southern Cal in 2024, Joyner rushed for 478 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Red Raiders open the season Aug. 30 at home against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Auburn claims 4 more titles

Auburn is claiming four additional football national titles and will call itself a nine-time champion moving forward. The Tigers boasted titles in 1957 and 2010. They also claimed the 1913, 1983 and 1993 seasons as meeting national championship qualifications. Now, though, Athletic Director John Cohen is adding titles from 1910, 1914, 1958 and 2004 to the program's resume. The Associated Press, which began handing out its annual national championship trophy in 1936, credits Auburn with two titles: 1957 and 2010. Banners recognizing those seasons hang inside Jordan-Hare Stadium. The other titles Auburn is claiming have varying degrees of validity. For example, the Bowl Championship Series existed in 2004, and the Tigers failed to make the title game. They finished 12-0 and third in the rankings behind undefeated Southern Cal and undefeated Oklahoma. Auburn finished second in the AP and the coaches' polls after the Trojans handled the Sooners in the title game.

Robles suspended for bat toss

Seattle Mariners outfielder Victor Robles received a 10-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for his conduct during the third inning of a Sunday game in Las Vegas during a rehab assignment, Major League Baseball announced Tuesday. Robles is currently with the Class AAA Tacoma Rainiers of the Pacific Coast League as he recovers from a shoulder injury. Las Vegas starter Joey Estes' first pitch to Robles in the third inning was inside and Robles whacked at it to avoid getting hit. After taking a few steps and dropping his bat, Robles picked up the bat and threw it at Estes and was immediately ejected from the game by home plate umpire Joe McCarthy.
