'I sat down with him': Alan Shearer says Alexander Isak has done something he never saw coming…

Alexander Isak has stunned Newcastle United fans with his actions, including Alan Shearer.

On the back of scoring in the Carabao Cup final and helping the club qualify for the Champions League, Alexander Isak had solidified himself as a Newcastle United legend.

Fast forward a few months and his legacy is in tatters. Isak wants to leave the club, and has been doing everything he can to make a move to Liverpool happen.

Isak released a statement on his situation on Tuesday night, having spent the majority of the summer away from his teammates and refusing to play for Newcastle United.

His actions have been staggering, with Alan Shearer in disbelief at the way the situation has panned out.

Alan Shearer never dreamt Alexander Isak would act like this at Newcastle United

While Newcastle fans only really know Isak from what he does on the pitch and says to the media, Shearer has actually sat down with him and had multiple conversations with him.

That is why Shearer finds the situation so shocking, having admitted on the Rest Is Football podcast that he never thought Isak would act like this.

“I sat down with him five or six months ago, and I didn’t see this in him,” he said.

“I thought he was a manager’s dream, to be honest. The way he spoke and was talking about himself, the club and his life and everything else.

“Obviously something has massively upset him.”

What Alexander Isak told Alan Shearer at the start of 2025

In February 2025, BBC Sport released an interview with Shearer and Isak.

The pair met at the Newcastle United training ground, where they discussed the remarkable season he was having, improving his game and his future at St James’ Park.

Shearer even alluded to Isak signing a new contract with the Magpies, which prompted a short response from the Swede.

Shearer: “We’ve seen recent big-name centre-forwards sign long contracts, you know what’s coming next…”

Isak: “Yeah, we’ll see. You never know.”

Shearer and Isak were laughing and joking about a possible contract. You can see the smile on Isak’s face.

Alas, it would appear that Isak was already unhappy about his contract situation at Newcastle United at this point. Talks over an extension had been put on hold in the summer of 2024, with Paul Mitchell going back on what Amanda Staveley was planning to do before her exit.

That left a sour taste for Isak, which appears to have been the moment that kicked off this incredible saga.
