Xabi Alonso has explained his decision to leave Rodrygo out of Real Madrid's 1-0 win over Osasuna amid links over a move to Liverpool. The Brazilian forward faces speculation over a move away from the Spanish capital after finding game time restricted since the Reds icon succeeded Carlo Ancelotti.

A possible move to Anfield has been mooted as a host of Premier League have been linked with the 24-year-old. Rodyrgo faces a decision over his future in Madrid as he hopes to be included in their World Cup squad for the forthcoming tournament.

Liverpool have been one of the busiest sides in the transfer window this summer with incomings and notable exits.

Following a flurry of sales in their attacking department, there is an element of Arne Slot heading into their Premier League title defence light after Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz left the club.

Rodrygo has been linked with a move to Anfield after struggling to earn a place in Xabi Alonso's side. His latest frustration came during their 1-0 win over Osasuna.

The 24-year-old was an unused substitute in their La Liga opener with Brahim Diaz preferred from the offset. The former Manchester City product was replaced by new signing Franco Mastantuono, who made his debut after arriving from River Plate.

Alonso rubbished reports of an exit, he said: "Rodrygo? Nothing is happening.

"I count on Rodrygo of course, it's just a game. This was my decision."

Speaking before the game, which was decided by Kylian Mbappe's effort shortly before the hour-mark, the Spanish tactician addressed the speculation surroudning his future.

He said: "There are a lot of rumours this summer.

"He looks good to me. I'm counting on everyone, and I want them to be committed to the team and be at 100%. That's what worries me and what's occupying me right now."
