Joao Pedro has West Ham demons to exorcise as he waits for Enzo Maresca's Chelsea selection decision

Enzo Maresca has some decisions to make over his starting side off the back of Chelsea’s underwhelming start to the Premier League season against Crystal Palace.

The Blues were held to a 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge, with the most concerning area on the pitch being in the attacking areas.

Joao Pedro started the game up front after his excellent Club World Cup and pre-season campaign, however was unable to create any meaningful opportunities for himself in front of goal.

There was an argument that Maresca should have started Liam Delap against Palace, with his physicality providing a different option up against a stubborn defensive three.

Even if he does not start up front, the likelihood is that the Brazilian will keep his place in the side, potentially moving into a role off the left of attack after a poor display from Jamie Gittens.

If Pedro does play against West Ham next time out, he has a bit of personal history with the London club that he will no doubt be desperate to address.

Despite making six appearances against the Hammers, he is yet to find the net against them from a total of eight shots.

Delap on the other hand did score against West Ham last season for Ipswich Town in his first season of regular Premier League football.

Pedro already impressing key teammates

Given his electric start to life as a Chelsea player, it has not taken Pedro long to make himself a key individual at Stamford Bridge.

One player who has been particularly impressed is Cole Palmer. The duo combined excellently for their third goal in the Club World Cup final against PSG.

Palmer praised Pedro in an interview recently, and the attacking pairing is going to be key to them picking up victory at the London Stadium.

After Maresca’s side blanked on the opening day last season, they responded with six goals next time out. Chelsea fans are no doubt hoping for something similar this time around, with Pedro having the chance to get off the mark in the Premier League.
