Max Wober has just been dealt a major setback during his loan stint away from Leeds United.

The Austrian’s time at Elland Road has been a nightmare so far, and both parties would have been pleased to secure a loan move to Werder Bremen for the 2025/26 campaign.

Leeds opted against selling Wober, despite calls for him to leave West Yorkshire on a permanent basis.

The centre-back is still under contract with Daniel Farke’s side until the summer of 2027, and his fresh start in the Bundesliga has not got off on the right foot by any means.

Max Wober suffers muscle injury after loan exit

Wober has only been away from Leeds for a matter of weeks, and he has already suffered a major setback.

The defender picked up a muscle injury on his debut for Bremen on Friday, as they were knocked out of the DFB Pokal by second tier side Arminia Bielefeld.

The full extent of that injury has now been revealed, and it is not good news at all for the former Red Bull Salzburg man.

Wober is facing a period of around six to eight weeks on the sidelines, according to reports in the print edition of BILD Bremen (20 August, pg.10).

The switch to the Bundesliga should have represented the perfect opportunity for the 31-cap international to get his career back on track, but instead it could result in him losing his spot in the pecking order before the league season has even begun.

Leeds United need to sell Max Wober

Wober’s stint at Elland Road could hardly have gone worse over the last two-and-a-half years.

Wober has still started just 19 games for Leeds in over two years with the club

He played just 332 minutes of league football last term

He had played 25 minutes of football for Leeds since January

Leeds paid a fee of around £11million for him in 2023

He was unable to save them from the drop in the Premier League after joining them in January 2023, and was then loaned out to Borussia Monchengladbach rather than helping the club recover in the Championship.

He was nothing more than a bit-part player for Farke last term, featuring in just 332 minutes of league action across the entire campaign.

The German boss has made it abundantly clear that there is no way back for the Austrian, and as such, the possibility of a permanent exit should surely be explored again in January.

There is little point in keeping a player like that around, especially when he is eating up valuable wages that could be used elsewhere.
