Lewandowski replacement: Barca planning 'stunning move' for 30-goal forward

Barcelona are reportedly giving serious consideration to moving for Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez during next summer's transfer window.

The Argentina international made the move to Atletico from Manchester City in 2024, and he had an excellent first season at Wanda Metropolitano, scoring 29 goals in 57 appearances for the club.

Alvarez is already off the mark for the new campaign, registering in a 2-1 defeat to Espanyol on Sunday, taking his record to 30 goals in 58 games for Atletico, in addition to contributing six assists.

The 25-year-old has a contract with the Red and Whites until June 2030 and is said to be happy in Madrid, but the forward does allegedly have some concerns surrounding how much silverware he could win at the club.

According to Fichajes, Barcelona are huge admirers of Alvarez, and the Catalan giants are exploring the possibility of signing him during the summer of 2026.

Barcelona 'weighing up' 2026 move for Atletico's Alvarez

The report claims that another trophyless season at Atletico would lead to the forward seriously considering his future, and Barcelona are said to be in pole position for his signature.

Barcelona are set to move for a new striker next summer, even if Robert Lewandowski stays for one more season, and Alvarez fits the brief in terms of the profile that the Catalan giants would be looking to bring in.

A switch to Camp Nou has allegedly 'always appealed' to Alvarez, with Barcelona winning three domestic trophies during the 2024-25 campaign and also reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Lewandowski is still going strong for Barcelona, and the club have the option to extend his deal until the summer of 2027, but the Catalan team require a long-term player in that area of the field.

Would Alvarez be a good signing for Barcelona?

World Cup winner Alvarez will believe that he is good enough to be representing a side that are genuine challengers for the major trophies.

Atletico are paying Alvarez a significant amount of money, and he will also again play Champions League football this season, but the Red and Whites are third favourites for La Liga behind Barcelona and Real Madrid, while they are not serious contenders for the Champions League.

The team's defeat on the opening weekend of the new La Liga season was also a major setback, but Alvarez was again on the scoresheet, and he has scored 18 times and registered four assists in 38 La Liga matches.

Alvarez also has 15 goals and five assists in 27 Champions League matches during his time at both Man City and Atletico, and he would be a glorious signing for Barcelona, but Atletico would demand serious money for him.
