The NBA schedule has been released, training camps are nearing, yet nine-time All-Star Russell Westbrook remains a free agent. After spending one season with the Denver Nuggets, Westbrook declined his $3.4 million player option to enter free agency.

While he is now 36 years old and five seasons removed from his last All-Star appearance, Westbrook remains a productive player. In 75 appearances (36 starts) for Denver last season, the 2017 league MVP averaged 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 6.1 assists.

These numbers earned him a seventh-place finish in Sixth Man of the Year voting, an award he likely would have placed higher in had he not started nearly half of his games.

Russell Westbrook Addresses Looming NBA Free Agency Decision

Despite a strong 17th NBA campaign, Westbrook remains unsigned. And by all accounts, retirement is not something he is considering. The former Oklahoma City Thunder star announced on Instagram earlier this summer that he plans to play an 18th season.

As fans clamor for information on Westbrook’s next team, he revealed in his latest Word of Westbrook newsletter that his decision is “on the horizon” and there is more to come.

“It’s no secret that there’s news about where I’ll end up on the horizon, and I appreciate y’all’s interest… but just hold tight, there’s more to come,” he wrote.

One week after revealing his free agency decision is nearing, Westbrook sent a two-word message to one of his fans who urged him to drop another Word of Westbrook article.

“Great idea,” he responded.

Russell Westbrook’s Newsletter Could Reveal His Next Team

Affirming his fan’s request for another newsletter article, it is possible Westbrook could announce his free agency decision himself. When the former UCLA star launched his newsletter, he made it clear that if it’s something meaningful to him, it will appear on Word of Westbrook.

“This newsletter isn’t just about fashion — it’s about art, culture, and our lifestyles,” his first article read. “Join me every other week for a front-row seat to the way I see the game… both on and off the court… If it moves the culture forward, you’ll hear about it here.”

With his latest segment teasing a decision coming soon, Westbrook could keep this momentum alive by announcing his own free agency news on his next newsletter. While there have been several reports on his NBA future, the likeliest landing spot right now appears to be the Sacramento Kings (via ESPN’s Tim MacMahon).
