Jets coach Aaron Glenn unwittingly kickstarted the rumor mill back in March at the NFL’s annual meeting. That’s when Glenn told the world that he felt so good about the depth in his running back room, that top running back Breece Hall would have to fight with second-year pros Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis for reps.
That started a wave of speculation: Could the Jets, who had been making sweeping changes since Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey took over in January, be willing to deal Hall?
By the time the NFL Draft arrived at the end of April, the conversation surrounding Hall was a full-blown national storyline, with rumors and reports of the Jets’ willingness to trade away Hall.
Mougey said during the Draft he wasn’t planning on trading Hall. Glenn said the same thing a few weeks later. But the conversation didn’t go away, and even resurfaced last week when there was speculation that it might make sense for the Jets to trade Hall before the deadline given their faith in Allen and Davis.
So on Tuesday, Glenn took a moment to try to quiet the storm in the most Glenn way possible: by directly addressing the storm and letting everyone know that he is annoyed with his existence.
“Listen, we have like three good running backs, and I keep saying that,” Glenn said. “And they all have different skillsets that we’re going to utilize. And that does not mean that I’m trading Breece. OK? [I’m] not. So, I’m going to say that right now. I just like having three good guys. Hell, I wish I had more, but we don’t.”
Glenn was clearly playing up his exasperation for the camera, which made the moment even funnier because it was such a departure from the straight-ahead seriousness we usually see from the Jets’ new head coach.
But he was also getting a point across, that the Jets are committed to Hall being a big part of the offense heading into this season.
