The New York Knicks have boasted multiple legendary players throughout their history. Still, some people may think of Spike Lee being their celebrity superfan before some of those stars because he is so ingrained in the Knickerbockers’ DNA. He was recently asked if Timothée Chalamet has what it takes to be his successor in that regard, and gave a simple answer.
“Well, I got nothing but love for Timothée, but I’m not ready to hand the baton on,” he said with a smirk and a snicker. “When I leave this Earth, then he can have it, because until then they have to wheel me out in a wheelchair. I’m gonna be courtside.” Enough said.
Lee has been riding with the Knicks through the highs and lows for decades. Several celebrities have also been loud and proud fans, but the legendary filmmaker supported them through some dark times. Many recently emerged to show their fandom for the Knicks as they became a perennial playoff team and force in the Eastern Conference.
Chalamet is one of the newer visible fans as his star power has risen; however, he was born in NYC and boasts having always supported the team, with photos of him going to games at just 14 years old circulating the internet. Nonetheless, he still has to respect deference when it comes to Lee.
The Knicks, led by Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns, gave their fandom their best year in decades this past NBA season. They battled with the Detroit Pistons in the first round, ultimately winning in six games. They stole two victories from the defending champion Boston Celtics on their home floor in the Eastern Conference Semifinals and also defeated them in six games. In the Eastern Conference finals, they reignited their historic rivalry with the Indiana Pacers, but unfortunately lost to them in six games, making it consecutive years where the Pacers ended their playoff runs.
