Man United 'set sights' on Real Madrid midfielder viewed as Baleba alternative

Manchester United have allegedly switched their attention to trying to sign a Real Madrid midfielder.

The Red Devils have already spent in excess of £200m to sign Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko during the summer transfer window.

However, Ruben Amorim is still eager to further strengthen his squad, particularly in central midfield with United having been strongly linked with Brighton & Hove Albion's Carlos Baleba.

As it stands, though, the Seagulls have no intention of succumbing to the temptation of cashing in on one of their most prized assets, who they value in the region of £100m or above.

That has left United in a position where they must consider alternatives if they wish to add to their engine-room contingent before the September 1 deadline.

Man United chase Real Madrid star

According to Fichajes, the Premier League giants are prepared to try to negotiate a deal for Eduardo Camavinga.

Since making the switch to the Bernabeu in 2021, Camavinga has made 180 appearances in all competitions, contributing four goals and 10 assists.

That said, the France international has sometimes deputised at left-back and missed chunks of action through injury, most recently in 2024-25.

With Camavinga currently on the sidelines and having missed Xabi Alonso's first La Liga fixture on Tuesday, it remains to be seen whether he will become first choice on his return.

United are reportedly giving consideration to proposing an €80m (£69.26m) package for the 22-year-old.

At this point, it seems likely that Real Madrid will reject such an offer, particularly when United may have gone higher for the lesser-proven Baleba if Brighton's valuation was not as high as it is.

Can Man United realistically sign Camavinga?

Despite the arrivals of Mbeumo, Cunha and Sesko, acquiring Camavinga's services would feel more significant to this United squad.

If Bruno Fernandes is being deployed in a deeper role, he requires a younger, combative player next to him rather than the aging Casemiro.

Although signing a fresh face for the engine room feels imperative, acquiring someone of Camavinga's age, experience and continued potential could prove as beneficial as improving the attack.
