The NFL preseason comes to an end this weekend, and the regular season is only days away. There are still very talented players available on the free agent market, though, usually veterans that don't need extended training camps and preseason work to be ready for game day. According to ESPN, that list of available players has a former Mountaineer at the very top of the list.
*1. Rasul Douglas, CB*
Douglas is a physical corner with the length to disrupt the ball and the willingness to set an edge against the run (five tackles for loss last season). He's an easy fit in a zone system that allows him to reroute underneath and attack the ball from the outside third of the field. Douglas returned one of his five interceptions for a touchdown in 2023, and he had five pass breakups last season.
Douglas has played for four teams over eight NFL seasons, accumulating 441 total tackles, 19 interceptions and returning three for touchdowns.
However, he is not the only Mountaineer on the list. Coming in at No. 8 on ESPN's best available free agents is Kyzir White, who most recently played for the Arizona Cardinals.
White is an off-ball linebacker with run-and-hit traits, and he had nine tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks last season. He has the pursuit speed to track the ball on the edges, and he has six interceptions, along with 16 pass breakups, in his career. White can be a three-down player for his new team.
White is averaging a whopping 120 tackles a year over the last four seasons, and it would be even higher if he had not been limited to eleven games in 2023 (where he still posted 90 tackles).
