Newcastle Team News:

After Alexander Isak’s Instagram post on Tuesday night that blew up social media, addressing his placement in the PFA Team of the Season and why he was not attending, as well as him publicly stating Newcastle broke promises to him and he would like to leave to join Liverpool, this game is going to be pure Barclays madness. St James Park is going to be a cauldron of anger.

What this also means is we can safely rule Isak out of Newcastle’s starting XI until this situation is resolved and he should not be in any FPL teams. He is an immediate sell if you decided to own him for GW1.

Lewis-Hall could come back in to the starting lineup, and he is better suited to play against a team like Liverpool, however the fact he did not come off the bench against Villa, to gain match fitness makes it less likely he starts against an attack that will punish any rust or lack of fitness/focus.

Same centre-back paring, in Schar and Burn. Howe won’t throw Thiaw into the mix for this game, no chance.

Same midfield trio of course.

Osula had a decent outing off the bench against Aston Villa in GW1 but Howe will likely stick with the same front 3 for Liverpool. There is a chance Murphy starts over Barnes at left-wing after Barnes pretty poor performance in GW1, however it would be unlike Howe to overreact to one performance and he tends to have his favourites.

Liverpool Team News:

Frimpong had a decent game in GW1. He was certainly the better of Liverpool’s two new full-backs. Against a phyiscal, tall Newcastle team Slot might want to play Gomez, who had a good cameo against Bournemouth replacing Endo at right-back which was a disaster experiment. But I lean Slot wanting to continue to bed in a key player brought in this summer, who he will want to mostly rotate with Bradley, not Gomez.

Kerkez will still get the starting nod over Robertson. He may not have had a good game, but both goals Liverpool conceded came with Robertson on the pitch, not Kerkez and Kerkez has the skillset to keep Elanga in check.

Mac Allister vs Szoboszlai for the left centre-mid role alongside Gravenberch will be one to watch this season and who Slot uses in that role for which games. Given Newcastle’s midfield is physical and can dominate a game, and Mac Allister did not have a full pre-season and is still gaining true match fitness, I think Slot will opt to go with Szoboszlai for this game.
