Breakthrough made! Chelsea 'agree fee' with Villarreal over Veiga transfer after compromise

Chelsea have reportedly decided to lower their demands for Renato Veiga, subsequently leading to an agreement with Villarreal.

Despite the recent ACL injury suffered by Levi Colwill, it quickly became apparent that Veiga would not be reintegrated into Enzo Maresca's first-team squad.

As such, Chelsea have been attempting to generate in the region of £34.5m for a player who they signed from Basel for just £12m last year.

Attracting such a fee has proven difficult, Atletico Madrid having already scrapped their interest and signed a cheaper alternative instead.

The same situation was in line to repeat itself when Villarreal expressed a desire to sign the Portugal international if Chelsea would reduce their valuation.

Villarreal make Veiga breakthrough

With Villarreal having never paid more than approximately £20m for one player in their entire history, Chelsea faced a losing battle when it came to tempting the Yellow Submarine to propose a fee close to their asking price.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital have now relented by accepting a lower sum for the 22-year-old.

Romano alleges that a package totalling €29.5m (£25.56m), including add-ons, has been agreed between the two clubs.

Furthermore, Chelsea will also possess what is described as a "heavy" sell-on fee, something that appears crucial in concluding the main part of negotiations.

Veiga is now expected to finalise a transfer to the La Liga outfit, where he will be viewed as a key player in their efforts to go deep in the Champions League.

Important business for Chelsea

As per UEFA's punishment for breaching financial regulations, Chelsea must ensure that they generate more through sales than spend through signings this summer if they are to register their new additions for the Champions League.

Officially, they have made a net-spend of somewhere in the region of £50m and £55m, heaping the pressure on facilitating sales as soon as possible.

Selling Veiga and making a profit in the process will be viewed as a major positive by Chelsea, even if they ultimately needed to relent on their previous hardball stance.

With the additions of RB Leipzig playmaker Xavi Simons and Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho held up until more sales materialise, emphasis remains on departures at this point.

Axel Disasi, Alfie Gilchrist, Ben Chilwell, Carney Chukwuemeka, Christopher Nkunku, Raheem Sterling, Tyrique George, David Datro Fofana and Nicolas Jackson are all on the transfer list.
