Villarreal agree deal with Chelsea for Renato Veiga

Chelsea and Villarreal have reached an agreement for the transfer of defender Renato Veiga, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Veiga is set to join Villarreal for a package worth €29.5 million including add-ons, while Chelsea will retain a substantial sell-on clause.

The Portugal international was linked with a switch to Atletico Madrid earlier in the window, but Los Rojiblancos were unable to agree a deal with Chelsea and have since signed David Hancko from Feyenoord.

Veiga joined Chelsea from Swiss outfit Basel last summer but spent the second half of the 2024/25 season on loan at Juventus after failing to secure consistent playing minutes at Stamford Bridge.

He can operate as a centre-back, left-back, or defensive midfielder, making him a shrewd addition to the Yellow Submarines as they prepare to return to the Champions League for the first time since 2022 after a fifth-place finish last time out.

Villarreal are currently dealing with injuries to Willy Kambwala and Logan Costa, so Veiga’s impending arrival at Estadio de la Ceramica could hardly have come at a better time.

Despite their mini injury crisis at the back, Marcelino’s side kept a clean sheet in Saturday’s 2-0 victory over newly promoted Real Oviedo to kick off their La Liga campaign on a winning note.

Meanwhile, Veiga’s departure from Chelsea comes as the Londoners look to trim their squad after another flurry of transfer activity this summer.

Chelsea have already added six new players and are expected to complete two more acquisitions before the September 1 deadline.
